Emma Katto

Year of Birth : 1958
Profession : Businessman
Started rallying: 1984 for one season. Did not rally again until December 1995. Then intensified action in 1996 and 1997.
Motivation for taking up rallying : Love of the sport since childhood when I used towatch East African Safari.
Other sporting activities : Cricket, tennis football.
The Future? : Hope to win KNCR title and compete in two or three world events.
Motor rallying idol : Juha Kankkunen.
Favorite rally car : Subaru Impreza WRC 555
Advice to up-coming rally drivers : Never give up. Practice as much as possible and work very hard on preparation of the car. You can only win if you finish.
Memorable win to date : Eldoret Pirelli Rally 1997. First KNRC win against serious competition.
Dissappointing moments : Getting so many puntures in the 1997 Safari that we were denied the 6th position and FIA 'B' status.
Motto while rallying : Never give up.
Comments on Ugandan vs Kenyan rallying scene : Ugandan rallying has improved tremedeously in the last two years. However, the organisers still lack the experience of the Kenyans. As a result, the Uganda scene is ridden with squabbles about results, etc.
Nonetheless, Ugandan drivers are improving fast with at least ten top notch drivers vying for top positions. The enthuasiam among rallying fans is unbelivable, with large crowds turning up in Kampala for local events. The following up-country is also impressive, so sponsors get real value for money.
The roads in Uganda are a lot smoother than the Kenyan ones. In fact, they are very similar to the Eldoret roads - very smooth and fast. In fact we particularly enjoyed the Eldoret because of this. We are dissappointed with some of the politics on the Kenya rally scene. We believe that rallying should be fun and as competitive as possible. The more competition there is at the top, the better for both fans and drivers.
